Sharon Owens from Lincoln, NE received a call to be the Missionary Director of ESL Outreach in Macau.
Sharon is a special missionary that the Lord has been preparing for some time to serve in this area of the world. She will be serving at the Concordia English Center, and will provide leadership, vision and direct ESL Bible Studies for the people of this area. She will serve as small group Chinese Bible study leader, and will supervise, train, and teach English Classes there.
Sharon was born and raised in the Milwaukee WI, area and graduated from High School at Oak Creek, WI. In 1995 she entered school at Concordia Mequon and then transferred to Concordia Seward NE, where she graduated in 2000. Sharon served as a DCE intern at the University Lutheran Chapel, ans called by the Nebraska District to work in the international ministry at the University Chapel in 2001. Her hobbies include camping, fishing, skiing, sewing, and learning about other cultures.
Sharon asks that we pray for new volunteer missionaries who will be serving in the fall, giving them planting vision and wisdom, and also to open the hearts of the Chinese people to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.
Macau is located in Southeastrn China. It is a tiny peninsula and two small islands, comprising less then 10 square ikles. It was a Portuguese territory until 1999 when it became part of the (PRC) Peoples Republic of China; population is 445,400. Most employment is in tourisn, gambling, trade with China, or light industry--mainly textile manufacturing. Religious life follows Chinese folk religion and lacks a strong sense of personal commitment. 60% of the people claim no religion. Most Christians there are affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
