MissionsClaude & Rhoda Houge

Missionary Family: Rev. Claude and Rhoda Houge

Rev. Houge and his wife Rhoda serve the Lord as missionaries in East Africa, based in Kenya.  Claude works with national church partners in supervising regional Mission Training Centers (MTCs) throughout East Africa.  He also helps to teach and train national church leaders who come to study at the centers.  Rhoda assists with curriculum developement and helps develop women's ministry through the MTCs.  The MTC model has proven to be be particularly effective in Africa, where the church is expanding more quickly than leaders can be trained. MTC help equip national church leaders to serve as evangelists and church planters among their own people as missionaries to neighboring people groups.

From 1998 to 2003 the Houges worked with LCMS World Mission in Ghana, initially in the North where Claude was coordinator and instructor in the evangilist-training program for church leaders.  Rhoda worked with Bible study and literacy programs for women.  Later, they served throughout the country with continuing education pastors and evangelists as well as teaching part time at the Lutheran Clergy Training Center in Accua.

Claude Previously served in the LCMS as a teacher, lay minister, and pastor in Nebraska, Ohio, and California.  Both Claude and Rhoda are graduates of Concordia University in Seward, NE where Rhoda also earned a master's degree.  They were missionaries with Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT) for 10 years, including six years in Liberia.  Claude entered the seminary in 1993 after two evacuations due to the civil war forced them from their work in Liberia.

Claude and Rhoda ask that we pray for the continuing outpouring of faith through the power of the Holy Spirit in His Word so that the people of East Africa keep coming to Christ in large numbers.  The need for trained church leaders and evangelists is particularly urgent because of the rapid expansion of the church among various groups.  Pray that the training of new leaders is blessed by the Holy Spirit.  Also pray that the women will grow in their ministry within the church.
