Camp Barnabas 2012 Summer Mission Trip June 15-23, 2012
Our summer mission trip in 2012 is to Camp Barnabas, a camp for special needs kids. Each week over the summer Camp Barnabas brings in 200 campers of various needs and abilities. One week might include blind and hearing impaired campers and another week will be designated for physically disabled campers. Each week has special activities that allow the campers to get the full “camp” experience with the love and attention of volunteers (you) and on site staff.
We leave on June 15 and from June 16 to June 23 you will be working with autism and/or developmentally disabled campers. This is a very special week. The camp program has been adapted to include many special measures that assist a child with autism to adjust to camp. Realizing that autism is a spectrum disorder, campers are grouped in the cabin with other people that are at a similar functional level. The child with developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome, TBI, or any other cause for mental retardation, is placed in a cabin group with campers that have similar ability levels. We will leave from Grand Island early in the morning on June 15, spend some time in Branson and enjoy the rides at Silver Dollar City, and then arrive at the Camp by 4 p.m. on June 16 for training before campers arrive. We will return to Grand Island late in the evening on June 23.
Youth age 14-15 serve at the camp as Barnstormers and serve in the kitchen and are assigned to a cabin where they WILL interact daily with the campers. This role requires maturity and a strong work ethic.
Youth age 16 and older serve as cabin counselors and are assigned to serve with an individual camper for the week, 23 hours of the day. This role requires compassion, maturity and a strong work ethic.
Cost for the week will be around than $540 for camp fee, transportation, meals, and lodging on the way to the camp. This event is full.
